But first safe bait so people who hate math don't have to see it.
If you have a 3x3 matrix...let's say
it looks like this:
a b c
d e f
g h i
what are your leading principal minors? Just the determinants? (so a(ei-fh) - b(di-gf) + c(dh-eg) ? Or is principal minors something else?
Many thanks. Sorry I bring maths in here so often. It's hard.

Funny, I've taken linear algebra, and though I've forgotten much, I don't remember ever knowing what a "leading principal minor" was. If I did know, it must not have been important.

Of course. 4.

It's probably not, but when you're asked to justify your answer using "leading principle minors" knowing what they are helps.

Such a cheap unhelpful troll post. But oh, how I laughed.

Same, I have no idea what that term means. Granted linear algebra was one of two courses I genuinely despised so I may have a PTSD block.

It was a course so nice, I took it twice.
(D->B, IIRC)

My dand brother are both engineers and said the same thing.

Or maybe i just told you the meaning of life and the universe.

Engineer here as well. The class is too mathy and we have computers for that crap. Why relearn what the pinheads in the math department are already experts in when you can be building or blowing up stuff?

same here...my thoughts were "the fuck is that?" Even though I've taken linear algebra

Math, and fixing cars, makes my living :-)
What can I say...

Plot twist: Linear Algebra is not actually a math course, it is a vocabulary course.
I took it three semesters ago and I also have no idea what a "leading principle minor" is.

I'm sure Matlab has a built in function for that

heres how I do it.
1. Insert values into the matrix.
2. make sure matrix has correct values, (I just made these up).
3. type in the power of -1 and then evaluate.
4. be happy because this took all of about 30 seconds.
(I'm using a ti-84 C silver edition)
you can do this for pretty much any size matrix.

Indeed. Thanks.

Probably. Doesn;t really help me show my work on my math assignment though.

That was a smart ass comment that really didn't come across as one. Joking aside, when I was in college if I saw the solution to a couple problems I could usually correctly work the problem, until you understand the process at least. Had some other people I knew that relied too much on the solutions manual... That will most certainly back fire at test time

Yeah. I actually am understanding it now. The solutions are useful to point you in the right directions. Principal minors is just the main diagonal on the minors matrix.

a lot of that linear algebra stuff is bogus. But a lot if it is a very useful tool. I say pass the class and then let the magic Matlab come to light
